Light of the port (2014-2016)
“THESE BIG SHIPS WITH THEIR STREAMLINED SHAPE, MASSIVE DENTS AND HUGE SCRATCHES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE MY CANVAS AND COLOUR PALETTE.”
Under the right circumstances, decay can be beautiful. Rusty steel and worn painting is pure art in my eyes.
I have no intentions of showing the ships as the eye sees them; plenty other photographers have already done that. My mission is to interpret the light, color and shape and convert it into art.
Well over 1000 images were shot from July 2014 till August 2016 at the harbor of Aarhus, Denmark. With handheld cameras on board the newest tug Aros and the workboat Ara of Port of Aarhus, I had the oppurtunity to photograph in areas of the port which aren’t accessible to the public. I carefully tried to compose the shots in camera, which wasn’t easy because of the shaky ground, I was standing on. Thanks to maintenance responsible shipmaster of the tugs, Knud Erik Østerberg Hansen who knows the port as his own pocket and is able to steer the vessels with optimal precision, I succeded to get the shots I wanted.
The images have been edited using various methods to enhance details, contours and colours which under normal circumstances aren’t visible to the human eye.
In som cases I’ve even taken the artistic liberty of re-colouring the ship.
I hope that you’ll enjoy the images as much as I.
